An Introduction To Om Chanting
Om chanting may be new to you, but it is worth it to give it a go. It has benefited many practitioners around the world who suffered from illness or are having hardship. It is not difficult to learn and can bring immense benefits.
What is Om chanting?
The word “Om” comes from the Sanskrit Six-Syllable Mantra, which consists of six characters or sounds, “Om Ma Ni Pad Me Hum.” As we chant and visualize these six syllables radiating brightness and illumination, we become as formless and limitless as the Universe and Nature, free of all afflictions and impurities.
Significance of Om chanting
Om chanting enables us to connect with Guanyin Bodhisattva, also known as Avaokitesvara, the bodhisattva of compassion. By chanting this mantra, we hope to receive blessings of health, purity and dharma power quickly from Guanyin Bodhisattva.

At times in our life, we feel frustrated and dissatisfied. Small matters in life become great annoyances. The root of these afflictions are mostly our greed; thus, in om chanting, illumination and transparency are the key methods of visualization.
Illumination represents light, and transparency indicates pureness. In order to be as clear and untainted as glass or diamond, we must be free of greed, anger, and desire for wealth, beauty, status, and power. However, living in a materialistic world, complete freedom from greed is difficult to achieve. Therefore, this is where Om chanting is significant.
Through Om chanting, we visualize our body and life illuminated, and without greed or affliction. Our body is illuminated and transparent, visualizing the transparent Buddha statue which symbolizes the transparent body and spirit. At the same time, sending off the mantra and our wishes with a compassionate heart to each corner of the world.
“While saying the first syllable Om…, we are visualizing our body and life are illuminated and without greed or affliction. We are also thinking the mantra is compassion and sending it to a far place. What can be sent far is low-frequency sound; the farther, the better, with the hope that all beings can hear it.” – Grandmaster JinBodhi, “Learning The Six-Syllable Mantra (Part 1)”
Best frequencies for Om chanting
When chanting Om Mani Padme Hum, we should use our lowest-pitched voice, like the heavy bass of a sound system. Bass sound waves are able to transmit sounds over longer distances. Visualize the mantra traveling on low sound waves to reach every corner of the world, and even outer space, transforming the Universe into one that’s illuminated and wonderful.
Besides, bass sound waves are also powerful. Oftentimes, when the bass music plays, the low frequency of the sound waves is so powerful that we can feel the ground shaking beneath us. The similar concept is applied for Om chanting. When we chant using our lowest-pitch voice, the resonance of our lowest, deepest voices enables our cells to vibrate along, so that our cells are illuminated, compassionate and filled with energy.
How can we achieve such an outcome? A small tip is that the sound should arise from where your seat meets the cushion. At the same time, visualize our body and life illuminated, without greed or affliction, and the mantra is far-reaching like the low-frequency sound. When using such a method to chant, the sound of the chanting is like rolling sea waves, wave after wave and we could literally feel the energy.
In short, the best frequency of Om chanting is low frequency or low pitch.

Let us have a look at a few testimonials from Bodhi practitioners.

Karen K | Canada
“Hello, my name is Karen, and my Dharma name is Fangmiao. I have an older daughter and she was feeling quite gloomy and down, feeling rather worthless. She has been working on a project for about a month and had not gotten anywhere and the deadline was within the next couple of days. So I invited her to chant with me during master’s retreat and it was on the first night. We sat down and chanted together. It was really lovely and you can feel the vibration.
In the end she was quite excited to learn chanting with people all over the world. When she can feel the vibration from the chanting in her body, we sat down together and worked on her computer. Like magic, that website that she has been working on for the entire month, for many many days, we were able to go ahead and get it all sorted out within a matter of a couple of hours. She could not believe how the chanting impacted, to finish this project that had been hanging heavy over her head.
She started to understand the magic of meditation and of Bodhi. The next night she decided to join me as well. I was joyful to chant with my daughter and for me it was really calming, and I just felt so connected. Through chanting, you can feel the presence of everyone. Grandmaster, I want to thank you for offering this seven day retreat on Youtube. It has been amazing and everyone is feeling so joyful and connected.”

On the 3rd day of taking medicine, I started chanting to Avalokitesvara for an hour, following Grandmaster JinBodhi’s past videos. While watching Grandmaster’s energy healing from crushing the walnuts and beans, I prayed that my hyperthyroidism would disappear. I kept chanting every day for 4 days, and then Grandmaster’s Six Syllable Mantra Bodhisattva Class began. After chanting the Six-Syllable Mantra, I went for a regular blood test.
My doctor said that my thyroxine had declined from 38.6 to 15.2 (the normal rate is 18). It is hard to believe that I had only consumed 8 days of medicine and my thyroxine had become normal. I immediately thought of Grandmaster and Buddha, thank you for your blessings!”

Irene | Toronto, Canada
“The greatest benefit from attending the Six-Syllable Mantra Bodhisattva Class is that my sleeping quality has improved. I used to stay awake in bed for one to two hours before falling asleep and always jolted awake twice or thrice during midnight. However, ever since I’ve joined Grandmaster’s online classes during the pandemic, I could fall asleep quickly and sleep through the night. I am truly happy and grateful.”
Michelle | Boston, US
“Before taking the Six-Syllable Mantra Bodhisattva Class, I had many sleeping issues. For example, I had a hard time falling asleep, often got up 4+ times at night, and my sleeping quality was poor. I often wake up feeling tired. After the class, I am able to fall asleep faster than before, and only got up twice in one night. Also I feel more energy the next day.”
How To Chant Om Correctly

Maximize the benefits from Om chanting through proper technique and visualization.
In the two-part online video series, “Learning The Six-Syllable Mantra,” Grandmaster JinBodhi teaches us how to chant Om Mani Padme Hum, The Six-Syllable Mantra.
A common but complicated visualisation method includes visualizing your body with a tube of illumination running through the center, like a fluorescent tube glowing. As you chant, the light intensifies and eventually the illumination of this tube spreads to the entire body. Along the way, you will see your head, heart, and throat become illuminated.
However, few people succeed using the method mentioned above; it is too complex and mysterious. Therefore, Grandmaster JinBodhi teaches an alternative, generalized guideline for practitioners to visualize. There are three most important regions in our body where we need to visualise illumination, which includes:
• Illumination of the head, which represents wisdom;
• Illumination of the heart, indicating kindness and compassion;
• Illumination of the reproductive organs, signifying adherence to precepts, diligence, and lack of greed.
After visualizing these three regions, the visualisation of illumination extends to our limbs, particularly our legs which serve the important function of enabling us to walk. Subsequently, visualize illumination at the arms. Arms are important as well. Without them functioning properly, we will suffer and life will be burdensome.
In dharma practice, a transparent body indicates healthiness. Therefore, one of the safest ways to chant is to visualize our entire body being illuminated, transparent and colourless. When we have such visualisation, our body will be healthy and filled with the energy of illumination.

The correct posture and mindset is also important:
1. You will benefit the most when you sit cross-legged. You could adjust your sitting position so that you’re comfortable during Om chanting. Although the posture of chanting is not strictly sitting position, it is not encouraged to lie down while chanting. A good example is to refer to Buddha’s seated meditation position, which is like a pyramid, an equilateral triangle. This position establishes the strongest resonance with the world.
2. You can use a flat or slightly slanted cushion.
3. Just make sure you don’t tip over backward when practicing at home.
4. Relax your whole body. Be at ease. Be pure and calm.
5. It’s best to also feel reverent.

It is important to chant sincerely, visualizing our body fuses with the mantra, letting go of our afflictions, greed and illness. The longer we chant, the better the effect. Om chanting brings happiness, auspiciousness, health to ourselves and the world and it could also eliminate our negative karma from many lives.
