An online Bathing the Buddha Blessing Cremony was held at 6 pm on May 7, 2022, (Taipei – Asian time 9 pm on May 8, 2022) at the Bodhi Meditation Vancouver Center, Canada. Grandmaster JinBodhi, the founder of Bodhi Meditation, hosted the livestreamed celebration of Sakyamuni Buddha’s birthday. The celebration included offering incense, praising and prostrating to the Buddha. With Grandmaster JinBodhi’s guidance, countless participants around the world sang praises to Sakyamuni Buddha’s great wisdom and expressed their gratitude to him for bringing auspiciousness and light to the world.

The Journey to Enlightenment

During the event, Grandmaster JinBodhi talked about Sakyamuni Buddha’s life, including his birth, growing up, practicing meditation, enlightenment, dharma teaching and his passing. Sakyamuni Buddha was born approximately 2,600 years ago during the Ancient India period. He began his practice to find a way to liberate people from the suffering of birth, sickness, old age and death. To achieve enlightenment, Sakyamuni Buddha went as far as eating only a grain of rice a day. After overcoming countless obstacles, he finally attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree.

The Benefits of Bathing the Buddha

Grandmaster JinBodhi explained the benefits and significance of Bathing the Buddha. When we bathe the body of the Buddha statue, we are actually cleansing our heart and mind. When our heart and mind are illuminated through the cleansing ritual, we can obtain health and happiness.

Handwashing in a Golden Basin

Grandmaster JinBodhi reminded all participants that an auspicious day such as the birthday of Sakyamuni Buddha is a good time for self-improvement. To do so, one may choose to come before the Buddha, sincerely vow to get rid of their bad habits, and wash their hands in a golden basin. Grandmaster JinBodhi also talked about carrying out the said ritual at home to get rid of evil, cultivate goodness, continue to do good deeds, practice and accumulate merits.

The Benefits of Making Offerings to the Buddha

Grandmaster JinBodhi talked about the benefits of making offerings to the Buddha and chanting. Doing so allows us to connect ourselves to the power of compassion of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas to eliminate bad karma and free ourselves from all disasters. Grandmaster JinBodhi said that all it takes to show respect to the Buddha is utmost sincerity and an offering as small as a flower. It is possible to obtain health, happiness, longevity, wisdom, wealth and peace, as well as reaching paradise, through making offerings, helping to construct meditation places, sponsoring to print and disseminate sutras, etc. Only by keeping up with meditation practices and continuing to do good deeds can we dispel bad karma and illuminate ourselves inside and out to achieve enlightenment.

As the event approached the end, Grandmaster JinBodhi led everyone in chanting and singing praises to the Buddha. At the end, Grandmaster JinBodhi gave two calligraphy paintings to the public as well as 108 gifts to lucky winners. Lastly, Grandmaster JinBodhi hoped that everyone’s wishes would come true.
