In 2015, my family moved to the city of Jakarta, in Indonesia, and my life became very stressful. I binged on junk food and relied on my favorite fried rice to reduce my stress. My weight rose from 68 to 76 kilograms, reflecting my eating habits and lack of exercise. Whenever I came upon a beautiful outfit I wanted to buy, it wasn’t available in my size. Not only was this frustrating, it eroded my self-confidence.

My battle with extra pounds began at 18 years old. Eventually I weighed as much as 150 pounds (approximately 68 kilograms). In an attempt to look slimmer, I wore only black clothes. I took weight-loss pills but as soon as I stopped taking the pills, my weight crept back up. Gradually, I lost hope of losing weight along with my self-esteem.

I had been overweight since about age 30, tipping the scales at 58 kilograms. My attempts at weight loss included weight-loss pills, yoga, jogging, and sauna baths. I even replaced my lunch with coffee. Although each attempt helped me shed about two kilograms, the weight rapidly returned. A slimmer physique seemed permanently unobtainable.

In June 2010 I was knocked down by a forklift at work. The accident broke my left shinbone (tibia) and calf bone (fibula). A doctor performed a lower-limb wound debridement to clear blood clots and bone fragments. Eleven days later I underwent a six-hour surgery during which two titanium plates fastened with 12 screws were installed in my leg.
