Tips for Choosing a Meditation Class

Let’s go through how to choose the right meditation class for you!

Finding the Right Meditation Master

At the heart of a good meditation course is finding the right meditation master. The right meditation master can guide you along your meditation journey and ensure that you reach your health, happiness, and even enlightenment goals.

Many people practice meditation diligently, but are still unable to achieve their desired outcomes. Why is this so? Besides having right intention and thought, correct practice methods are important too. Here, a critical question arises: Who is your teacher? Who is your guru? Your teacher plays an important role in your meditation journey. An unfit teacher will not be able to teach you anything. If he doesn’t know, how can he teach?

A good teacher should have the right intention, diligent practice, and be enlightened, compassionate, and knowledgeable. In practicing dharma and meditation, your Master has much more wisdom than you. Master will teach you his experience, and the truths he has realized, and even give his energy to you.

Trying Different Classes

There are many types of meditation courses out there – from health-based retreats to stress-relief retreats, chanting meditation courses, and classes on Buddhism. Some meditation courses are online, others are in-person, and each class’s length and difficulty may be different. Different meditation courses may have different focuses, goals, and teachings. Different meditation courses may also teach and practice different meditation methods.

You may want to try all the meditation classes out there in order to find the right one for you. This is a great idea, but keep in mind that in order to fully experience the benefits of each meditation course, you should attend and complete all the classes. Don’t come for one day of a seven-day retreat and decide it’s not for you – instead, commit to fully experiencing the full seven-day retreat with your whole body, mind, and spirit.

Making it a Habit

The positive effects of meditation may not appear immediately after beginning practice. Therefore, make an effort to maintain your commitment to practicing.

It may be challenging to learn how to quiet the chatter in your head at the beginning of a new meditation course (particularly for those who are just beginning their meditation practice). But before you give up on it, you should give it a good go first.

In fact, consider the concept of a ‘100-Day Foundation’ – when you are starting to learn meditation, it takes at least 100 days to build a basic foundation. Everyone learns and progresses at different speeds, so don’t be discouraged if those around you seem to be much ‘better’ at meditation than you are. Instead, be mindful that we are all progressing on our own individual meditation journeys, and that your commitment, persistence, and diligence are key to achieving health and happiness.

You’re welcome to meditate at any of our Bodhi Meditation centers. The community and environment are ideal for maintaining your meditation motivation, holding you to your commitments, inspiring your practice, and developing a good meditation habit.

Are Meditation Courses Worth It?

Yes, taking meditation courses is absolutely a worthwhile investment of your time. The practice of meditation may help you achieve a state of peace, bring about change in a variety of facets of your life over time, and, finally, help you become a more improved version of yourself.

Meditation has many different approaches and levels of difficulty. It can be difficult and dangerous for someone without a foundation in meditation or any prior experience to guide themselves along the path of meditation. Rather, it is critical to find proper guidance and supervision from an experienced teacher in a safe environment for meditation.

It is highly recommended that those who are new to meditation take part in structured meditation courses. Beginners can receive systematic instruction, establish a strong foundation, and make substantial progress when they attend a meditation class taught by a trained expert. Beginners may also seek expert help about the questions and issues that arise throughout the meditation process to prevent going down any unnecessary rabbit holes.
